A bicorn hat named to William W. Galt (1852-1934) who was the paymaster of U.S.S. Raleigh during the Spanish -American war. The beaver pelt hat, bullion epaulets and belt with sword hanger are in the original leather velvet lined box. Hat carries S.N. Meyer logo and attached name label inside in very good condition. Size 7 and 1/8. The ends feature blue and gold bullion tassels. The original button on hat is bright and clean. The epaulets are in very good condition with minor pulls to the bullion and some fraying. One features the U.S. eagle and oak leaf bullion. The Horstmann Bros. belt is complete and in very good condition. Also included in this lot from Mr. Galt is a Spanish vessel ensign measuring 7 by 1 feet. The flag is in worn condition. In early May of 1898 the USS Raleigh took part in the battle of Manila Bay with Dewey aboard the Olympia. On May 12 the Spanish ship "CALLAO" steamed into the bay and Raleigh gave chase, the ensuing battle ended in the Callao striking her colours and surrendering to Raleigh. This is believed to be her captured ensign. The archive has been in the possession of a family friend of Galt for over 60 years.
