Ornately crafted sword, presented to Captain Stephen Martin, from Company G, 5th Regiment Veteran Reserve Corps during or shortly after the Civil War. 31 inch blade is marked W. Clauberg, Solingen, with standing knight logo, and etched with "US", and on obverse, an eagle with wings spread, and "E Plubris Unum" banner. Marked "Iron Proof" on spine of blade near ricasso. Gilt brass hilt adorned with floral scroll, and quillon in shape of an eagles head, with silver grip featuring fine laurel engraving. Equally ornate scabbard, with silvered finish and prominent brass repousse bands. The first shows a high relief of an armed Columbia, with shield of United States in one hand, and a sword in the other, with obverse engraved "Presented by Co. G, 5th V. R. C., to Capt. S. Martin". Middle band features the relief collage of various American iconography, and the chape features a relief of an officer marching with flag and sword. Blade shows a mellow grey patina, with clear, crisp, and detailed etching. Hilt and grip are very good, with some patina to brass. Scabbard is also in very good condition, with some very light dings, mostly to chape. Overall excellent example of a fine presentation piece.
