Romano-Egyptian Ceramic Miniature Sarcophagus

Lot Passed

Circa 30 BC-323 AD A votive or canopic sarcophagus in Romano-Egyptian style, formed as a ceramic matrix with anthropomorphic features and embedded objects visible on the upper surface: a small bronze bangle above the head; a series of red, blue and green glass discs within the bangle; a plano-convex blue glass disc at the hip; a red stone triangle on the chest; a star-shaped item, perhaps a bead, at the knees; the creamware surface painted in red, yellow and blue emphasising the anthropomorphic features; hieratic or demotic characters to the underside and traces of similar to the sides and foot. Ceramic, 2.0 kg, 36 cm (14 1/4") Ex Steinberg collection; bought from a London gallery in the early 1990's. Accompanied by an explanatory statement describing the origin, source and form of the piece, together with reference to X-ray images (from Ipswich Museum, since lost") which showed a resinous package positioned internally.
