Circa 3rd century BC A silver applique depicting a gorgoneion mask with wreath to the furrowed brow, flared nostrils and crescentic open mouth. Silver, 10 grams, 34 mm (1 1/2") Property of a London Gentleman; acquired before 1985. The Gorgoneion was an apotropaic symbol among the Greeks, painted on shields and items of military equipment.
