Circa 2nd-3rd century AD. A cast openwork silver brooch in the form of a vase with ribbed body and bell-shaped neck emitting trailing, scrolled foliage; lugs, pin and catchplate to the reverse. Silver, 10 grams, 31 mm (1 1/4") From the private collection of an German Gentleman, acquired prior to 1982. The motif of a vase with foliage extending from the mouth occurs elsewhere in Roman art, e.g. in the mosaic floors in the palace at Fishbourne, Sussex, England.
