Circa 1st century AD A cast bronze rectangular stamp matrix with ring handle and pedestal above; the underside with reversed text in six groups reading: (i") CN.CNLVCRETI with leaf inserted between words (ii") CHARITONIS (iii") ANTH (iv") ECLY (v") CONIS (vi") SER. Bronze, 185 grams, 73 mm (3") Property of an European Gentleman living in London; acquired in the UK before 1980. 'Charitonis' may be a reference to Chariton of Aphrodisias, a Greek author who wrote the romantic story Chaereas and Callirhoe in the 1st century BC. [No Reserve]
