Circa 1st-3rd century AD A cast bronze casket foot in the form of a winged sphinx; the foot a lion's claw gripping a bell-shaped pad, developing to a rounded female body with outstretched wings, and head with Egyptian-style coiffeur; to the rear an integral ledge. Bronze, 225 grams, 10 cm (4") Acquired on the London art market in the 1960's. The modelling of the figure recalls the winged sphinx statuary in e.g. the Acropolis museum, Greece.
