Circa 9th-11th century AD A cast silver pendant in the form of a T-shaped hammer with tapering round-section shaft; the head decorated with a dense array of punched dot-in-triangle motifs extending to the lower shaft; a silver suspension ring inserted through the pierced finial. Silver, 15 grams, 43 mm (1 3/4") From an old European collection, acquired prior to 1990. Thor's hammer, Mjolnir, was used to hallow the bride at wedding ceremonies and was worn in pendant form as a sign of faith during the Viking period.
