Circa 5th-6th century AD A cast silver brooch in the form of a cicada; the body with transverse ribbing extending to a fleur-de-lys finial; the terminal modelled as a beast-head with curved beak and ring-and-dot eyes; pierced lug and catchplate to the reverse. Silver, 10 grams, 53 mm. (2") From the private collection of a German Gentleman, acquired prior to 1982. The cicada was one of the symbols of Frankish royalty, and featured in the grave-goods of Childeric in the tomb at Tournai, Belgium.
