Circa 6th century AD A large bronze brooch in the shape of a stylised eagle with central domed boss, trapezoidal wings and tail; linear detailing to wings, tail, neck and boss; a small cabochon garnet eye to the head and another to the centre of the boss; pin-lugs and catchplate to the reverse. Cf. unprovenanced Spanish example in the Museum fur Vor- und Fruhgeschichte, Berlin, inventory number Vb572 published in Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders item IX.6.8. Bronze, 49 grams, 76 mm (3") Property of a European Gentleman living in London; acquired in the UK before 1980.
