Circa 6th century AD. A cast silver-gilt animal head mount with D-shaped recess to the reverse and integral rivet to the face; the head formed with pelletted crescentic brows, annular eyes, leaf-shaped nose with lateral ribbing and two annular nostrils below. Silver, 3.97 grams, 17 mm. (3/4") From an old Lancashire collection. Masks of a similar type formed the finials of Anglian bow-brooches.
