Anglo-Saxon Gilt-Bronze Chip Carved Mask Mount

Circa 6th century AD A cast gilt-bronze D-shaped mount, hollow to the rear; the design a Salin's Style I face with broad nose and annular eyes, rib detail below. Gilt-bronze, 3.04 grams, 15 mm. (1/2") Found at a moot site, Stockbridge Down, Winchester, UK; recorded with Winchester Museum by the finder. Most Style I art shows a human face in profile with a triangular nose and brow, reminiscent of a helmetted head. The present piece shows the same motif facing the viewer. Parallels to this design can be found on the Saxon button brooches found mainly in southern England.
