Circa 16th century AD A group of three lead panels from a triptych comprising: a narrow panel depicting a robed, bearded St. John the Baptist figure in an arch, his left hand on a block; a wider central panel depicting an enthroned nimbate Christ on a field of vinescroll, the right hand lifted in blessing and the left cradling a gospel, evangelists to the corners; a narrow panel depicting a robed bearded figure of Zacharias in an arch, with a censer in his right hand and lantern in his left; all pierced for attachment. Lead, 1.9 kg, 30 cm (12") Property of a Sussex Gentleman; acquired before 1990. The three panels are modelled on the tripartite front cover of the Lorsch Gospels, created in circa 810 AD and itself replicating the ivory carvings on a 6th-century Byzantine throne in Ravenna. [3]
