Circa 12th-13th century AD A vellum leaf from a French psaltery; the text including psalm 76, executed in a single column of blackletter script with a large versal decorated in gold-leaf and blue ink; a column of scrolled ornament to the left, with a human head in profile; each verse with a decorated capital in red or blue ink, or gold leaf; geometric blocks in red, blue and gold to fill the lines; supplied in a custom-made card mount. Vellum, 165 grams, 36 cm (14") Property of a London Gentleman; acquired before 1985. The leaf is from a psalter from the reign of King Philip Augustus (1179-1223 AD"), executed in northern France, possibly near Noyons. The quality of the work indicates that it was commissioned by or for a member of the royal court.
