Post Medieval French 'Royalty Mutilated' 1562 Metrical

Sign In to see what this sold for

Published 1562 AD A massive copy of the French metrical psalter of 1562, from the Diocese of Rheims, deliberately mutilated during the 18th century French Revolution to remove all references to the French King and royal images (see pages 28, 88, 89, 256, 274, 292, 4, 53, 118, cvii, ccxxxvii and cclv"); also with an inked date of 15th April 1595 to fep, some additional pages in manuscript in an old and very neat hand (see pages 118 on"); in three parts, pages 5-292 (titles and all before p. 5 lacking"), 1-118 (plus 3 pages of manuscript") and i-cclx (pages cliv/clv and ccv-ccviii excised and all after clxx lacking"); original boards (some original leather surviving") and one original strap. 6.4 kg, 50 cm (19 1/2") Ex Baker collection. The texts of the French Psalter were brought together from two independent sources: the poet Clément Marot and the theologian Théodore de Bèze. Marot and de Beze's psalms appeared in a number of different collections, published between 1533 and 1543. The full psalter containing all 150 canonical Psalms, plus the gospel canticle Cantique de Siméon (Song of Simeon"), appeared in 1562. The French psalms were set to Gregorian and secular melodies that were harmonized and altered for congregational singing. Following the removal of the French royal family from power during the French Revolution, items which bore royal devices, dedications and the like were deliberately defaced to remove such references. Surviving examples of these are rarely seen today.

Condition report

The binding poor but text block generally sound except as noted; some pages with small tears. Rare and interesting.
