Circa 14th century AD A substantial portion of a wooden portcullis comprising a vertical post and cross-member, secured with a large square-headed nail and wooden rove to the rear; a small silver plate at the junction. Wood, 3.6 kg, 45 cm (17 3/4") From the York City gate which was demolished in the 1830's; mounted as a commemorative item, with a silver plaque on one side. Monk Bar is a four-story gatehouse, the tallest of the four gates of York, built in the early 14th century. It was intended to be a self-contained stronghold, with each floor capable of being defended independently. The current gatehouse was built to replace a 12th century gate known as Munecagate, (gate of the monks") which stood on the site of the Roman gate, the porta decumana . [No Reserve]
