Dated 1762 A gold quarter guinea of George III, bent into an s-profile for use as a love token. Spink, Coins of England & The United Kingdom 2011, page 409, item 3741. Gold, 2.07 grams; 15.51 mm (3/4") From an old English collection of metal detecting finds. The giving of a 'crooked' coin as a token of love is well known from at least Elizabethan times until the 18th century and beyone; it is referred to in the children's nursery rhyme about the crooked man who finds a 'crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile'. The use of silver sixpences, often very worn, for this was prevalent but a few examples, such as this one, are known using gold coins of the period. [No Reserve]
