Circa 18th century AD A cast silver seal matrix with discoid base and octagonal stem and openwork scrolled handle; the design a heater shield with a bend between six bees with a crescent at the upper end. Silver, 6.94 grams, 27 mm (1") From an old Yorkshire collection; acquired in the 1960's. The arms are those of the Beeson (or Beason, Beeston") family. The cresent was used in heraldry as a mark of cadency denoting the second son of the person by whom the arms were borne. In the 17th century, there were two men of the name Sir Hugh Beeston in Parliament. One was a member of Lincoln’s Inn, and sat in the 1589, 1593, 1597, 1601, 1604 and 1614 Parliaments. He and his family were suspected of being recusants.
