Circa 16th century AD A rectangular German or Dutch stove tile with deep brown treacle glaze depicting an Elizabethan period lady within an arch; the lady wearing a narrow-waisted ruffed dress and pearl necklace, elaborate bouffant hair and drop earring; her left arm raised and her hand resting on a (chair?") frame; the arch supported on fluted columns, with putto faces above; within the arch, rolled drapery; to the reverse, a raised base. Ceramic, 1.1 kg, 19 cm (7 1/2") Property of a Sussex Gentleman; acquired before 1990.
