Circa 1500-1520 AD A hand-forged backsword or sabre, composite with complex hilt; the 69 cm blade slightly curved with thick back edge and shallow fuller; the crossguard straight with discoid terminals, each with a brass rivet; a recurved finger-guard extending from the lower edge, with similar terminal; a finger-ring to the forward face, segmented with brass rivet detail; a knuckle-guard extending from the crossguard to the pommel, segmented with brass rivet detail; the grip barrel-shaped and leather covered; the pommel bulbous with raised rib detail to the upper face. 990 grams, 83 cm (32 3/4") From an important West Country collection. The sword is possibly an early type of Schweizersabel or 'Swiss sabre', developed from the bastard sword and used mainly in Switzerland in the 16th and 17th centuries.
