Circa 1530 AD A stiletto dagger comprising: a lozenge-section blade with ricasso; round-section quillons with segmented domed terminals; barrel-shaped grip with helical detail; biconical pommel with helical detail; to the ricasso three punched maker's marks each in the form of a fret. Steel, 400 grams, 36 cm (14") Property of a Sussex Gentleman; acquired before 1990. The fret mark is believed to be associated with the work of Giulio Romane, a renaissance painter, draftsman and architect who worked with Raphael. The stiletto is probably of French workmanship, from the royal palace of Fontainebleu near Paris.
