Circa 16th century AD A single-edged knife comprising a long triangular-section blade and scale-tang handle; the two green-stained bone scales with D-shaped stops and silver strip extending along the outer edge to frame the tang; the scales ornamented with a series of five decorative studs each with a six-pointed star motif in enamel; between these studs the five securing rivets, each flanked by two small studs with segmented enamel design; at the upper end, two larger and four smaller studs; the outer strip decorated with running vinescroll designs; the blade with stamped maker's mark; possibly Islamic Spanish workmanship. Cf. Wheeler, R.E.M. London Museum Medieval catalogue 1940, item A.13924. Steel, bone and silver, 95 grams, 30 cm (12") Property of a Sussex Gentleman; acquired before 1990. Believed to have been recovered from Southwark docks.
