Two Imperial Japanese porcelain sake cups, each of wide flared form set on a foot: the larger decorated with three birds, each holding a foliage spray in its beak, alternating with three 16-petaled chrysanthemum kamon, the Imperial Seal of the Emperor; the smaller with a single Imperial 14-petaled chrysanthemum kamon surrounded by foliage; D: 3 7/8" (larger); Provenance: Dr. Rodney Tillman Collection; purchased by the current owner from the Imari family, keepers of the "Shrine of the Long White Beard" of Tokyo, in 1947 [By repute: The cups were made for and presented to the Shrine by Emperor Hirohito]
