José Martí­nez: Feather Design - Size: 6" x 7" - Jose Martinez is generally recognized as one of the finest potters making black-on-black pots. On this exquisite eight-sided piece, the painting is impeccable and the burnishing is arguably the finest in Mata Ortiz pottery. Jose's uncle, Hector Gallegos Senior, helped him to get started in clay; while his wife, Suzy Lopez Martinez, has close family ties with the innovative style of Macario Ortiz and others. For several years, Jose has consistently won awards in the Mata Ortiz pottery competition, (concurso) and regularly shows his work in the States. Jose and Suzy Martinez have three children and live near the church in Barrio Iglesia.
