Edition des Amateurs, one of 26, out of series, with plates in 2 states. The lower half of the LS is mounted to an inserted leaf provided by the Grolier Bindery, at front of Vol I of “The Life of Napoleon." The LS is an authorized transcription of a letter by another individual, possibly “Mazurier,” in secretarial hand, signed by Napoleon Bonaparte. “Ventose” was a month of the French Republican calendar beginning Feb. 19, 20, or 21, and Year II of the Republic was 1793-1794. LS reads: “Liberty Equality/ 3rd Division/ Artillery/ Personal/ Paris, the 7th of Ventose in the 2nd year of the Republic, the one and the indivisible./ Mazurier (?), adjunct to the Minister of War, to citizen Buonaparte, Commander of the Artillery in Marseille./ Since citizen Cerrier [possibly “Berrier” or “Gerrier”], Capitan Commander of the 17th Light Artillery Company cannot continue in this service because of his inconvenience, he must return the 600 [francs ?] that he got for joining the Calvalry, otherwise the minister cannot authorize his return to the 4th Artillery Regiment; it is a necessary and indispensable precondition./ Signed on the original, Mazurier/ Certified to conform to the original./ The General of the Artillery of the Italian Army./. [signed] Buonaparte.”

Condition

Light wear to edges of covers, a few spine crowns lightly nicked, spine bands moderately rubbed, spines sunned. Several vols have staining to the eps and insides of their covers (not including the volume that contains the LS). The 3 volumes most significantly affected have dampstaining to their texts (Vol V of “The Life of Napeoleon,” Vol II of Talleyrand, and Vol IV of Memoirs). In the case of Memoirs, Vol IV, the half title is significantly affected. LS is very good, with moderate foxing.
