William C. Grauer (American, 1896-1985) "Almeria Enclosed Home," 1960, oil on masonite, 25" x 16.5", signed lower right, framed. Born in Philadelphia, Grauer was an active painter and teacher until his death at 89 years old. Grauer trained at the Philadelphia School of Industrial Design. In 1920 he relocated to Cleveland where he opened his own studio and became well known as a muralist. He created murals for the Cleveland Builders Exchange (1928), the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia (1932), the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago (1933) and the New York World's Fair (1939). Grauer is in numerous collections including The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
