N.C. WYETH, OIL ON CANVAS, 40" X 32", "AN EARLY THANKSGIVING", 11/1/'26 COVER, THE COUNTRY GENTLEMAN:Newell Convers Wyeth, American 1882-1945. Gilt frame. 40 3/16" x 32 1/8". Ex. Coll. Seberon Shields, Detroit, MI and then passed down in the family; acquired by Mr. Shields at least 50 years ago (or more). Inscribed on back of canvas: "YB675" and "Pd. 7-15-26 November Cover CG." The Country Gentleman magazine was published by Curtis Publishing and dealt with the business side of farming. Originally the painting only had his symbol of a 'W' in an oval as seen in the lower left of the painting and in the printed Country Gentleman cover. The signature 'N.C. Wyeth' and the date which occur just to the right of his symbol on the lower left corner were probably added later when the painting would have been sold by the artist or he was asked to sign it by Curtis Publishing hence accounting for the last digit of the date that looks like both a 6 and a 7 (1926 and 1927). The signature also may have been removed for publication and was therefore re-signed later. Provenance as per consignor: Ex. Coll. Seberon C. Shields, family owned for 3 generations (most recently from uncle to mother to son). Reference: see http://curtispublishing.com/artists/Wyeth.shtml
Under UV light: appears to be UV clean with an occasional small streak of green being probably due to remnants of old varnish; not lined or patched; no visible craquelure; original stretchers (2 replaced stretcher keys [wedges] and one key missing); original gilt frame (some patina wear to frame).
