Description
A large terracotta armored figure of Bes, Ptolemaic, c. 3rd - 2nd Century BC, holding a Gaulish shield, sword-arm raised high. He wears a light Macedonian cuirass over a tunic and his facial features are fierce. H: 8 1/4" (20.9 cm). Some losses to legs, arm and crown, but a large and attractive example. Mounted on a custom wooden base. Cf. Bailey, Ptolemaic and Roman Terracottas From Egypt in the British Museum, p. 40, no. 3100 for a near identical example; Ex Orange County private collection.
