An Athenian red-figure skyphos with an owl, c. 450 - 400 BC, the handles horizontal, the body tapering to a small flared foot with indented center. On either side is a nicely rendered owl, the patron of the goddess Athena, standing right, head facing, flanked by olive sprigs. H: 3 3/8" (9.2 cm). Intact, one very small inner rim chip. Nice surfaces and a pleasing example of this popular cup! Ex Dr. Gilles collection, Germany, acquired before 1960.
