Ohio, 1858, a red and green coverlet woven on a jacquard loom and with signature, Made by D. Cosley, Xenia, Ohio, 1858; lg. 90, wd. 82 in.
Dennis Cosley was born in Virginia, 1816. He learned the weaving trade in Pennsylvania and established himself in Xenia, Greene County, Ohio, by 1847. He produced an array of coverlets and carpeting for Ohio and Kentucky patrons. Sometime in 1860, Cosley dropped the location from coverlet corner blocks, and wove only his name and date. He died a wealthy man in Troy, Ohio, in 1904.
