OLIVER ELLSWORTH, (1745-1807) Signature, Book. A handwritten order of payment dated June 6, 1776 for saltpeter signed by Jn. Lawrence, T. Seymour and O. Ellsworth. Ellsworth, who served as a delegate at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, was appointed third Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1796-1800). Page is 8 1/4 x 4" in mat; framed 14 3/4 x 10". This item has not been examined out of frame. With book by George van Santvoord, "Sketches of the Lives and Judicial Services of the Chief-Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States." NY: Charles Scribner, 1854, featuring the first five Chief-Justices: John Jay, John Rutledge, Oliver Ellsworth, John Marshall and Roger B. Taney. Edges rubbed, water damage and some foxing to inside pages. overall good- condition/no DJ. .
