8vo, rebound in full crushed red morocco, gilt-lettered spine, silk endpapers, a.e.g., publisher's red cloth bound in the rear. First published (second English) edition. The first edition of 2,000 was recalled by Dodgson, following the unsatisfactory printing of Tenniel's illustrations, and was never offered for public sale. Upper hinge cracked; 1/2-inch tear to frontispiece; evidence of previous owner's manuscript ex-libris to half-title; professionally repaired tear to 91/92, 93/94, 97/98; some light toning and a few intermittent light stains.
