Item Details
Description
Pair of solid silver salts from J.P. Morgan's private yacht Corsair III (1899). The bowls are engraved S.Y. Corsair on one side and have engravings of Corsair III on the reverse. Each has two handles, reeded columns and detailed circular bases. The pieces are not hallmarked but have been tested and confirmed as solid silver by noted metal specialist Otto Suchy. The pieces are very sturdy with a high polished finish. Corsair III, launched in 1899 was 304 feet long with a beam of 33.5 feet. 8 3/4" tall, base is 5" diameter. *If any yacht deserves the title of THE Steam Yacht it is this beautifully proportioned, handsome, fast, seaworthy vessel. She was designed by that master graceful line J. Beavor- Webb and built by T.S. Marvel with the finest job of plating known. She was 304 feet long and weighed over 1100 tons. This Corsair was the third one of that name owned by J. Pierpont Morgan and after his death, by his son. He had turned over his second Corsair to the Navy in 1898. This Corsair was about 60' longer than the second. More powerful and faster than her predecessor, she differed principally in that she was twin screw, to provide better turning ability particularly in the Hudson River near her owner's home. Other than these differences, her owner specified that she should be the same as the second Corsair in every way. She was commissioned in 1899 and as her owner was Commodore of the New York Yacht Club at the time, she immediately became the Club's flagship. Throughout her life she was always the outstanding yacht in any group. Her perfectly raked tall masts, and perfectly proportioned funnel, made her the ideal of a yacht, majestic as well as graceful from any angle. She was beautifully maintained. Her captain during all or nearly all her life as well as captain of the fourth Corsair was W. B. Porter, a ship's officer whom Mr. Morgan obtained from one of the lines of his International Mercantile Marine. Her owner used her extensively not only in summers as a floating home near New york but for commuting to and from his estate on the Hudson River. He also used her often as a place for business meetings, where he and his guests could enjoy privacy and lack of distraction.
