This Canvas Edition Is Hand Embellished With Oils Which Display The Look And Texture Of His Originals. Each Piece Is Hand Signed And Numbered By Viktor Shvaiko From An Edition Of Only 65. Paper Size: 22" X 30" Year: 2001.  Includes Certificate Of Authenticity. Unframed. Mint Condition.  It Is True That Viktor Shvaiko Paints Beautiful Pictures, And This Fact Alone Would Be Sufficient Explanation For This Artist's Appeal. However, It Is Apparent To Even The Most Casual Observer That Shvaiko's Meticulously Crafted Paintings Reach Us At Many More Levels. To What May We Attribute The Evocative Nature Of These Works? Undoubtedly, Technique Plays A Part. Layer Upon Layer Of Color Is Applied From A Palette Both Subtle And Complex; Glazes And Varnishes Infuse Each Image With Sense Of Depth And Luminosity. Both Brush And Palette Knife Are Brought To Bear. Viktor Shvaiko's Years Of Formal Training Are Evident, As Are His Confidence And Intensity. But Our Fascination Cannot Be Elicited Through Technique Alone. Perhaps It Is The Fact That In These Charming Cafe And Street Scenes, We Find The Perfect Metaphor For Romance. Who Can Resist The Siren Call Of This Most Celebrated Of Human Emotions, With Its Attendant Feelings Of Excitement And Warmth, Anticipation And Mystery? The Open Doors, The Narrow Alleyways, Beckon Us In. There May Be A Glowing Fire; Drinks Are Poured. But As We Peer Inside, Much Remains Obscured. The Rest Of What We See Is Reflection And Imagination, And Our Imagination Hastens To Fill In The Scene. Who Is Awaiting Us Inside This Inviting Place? Is It An Old Friend, A New Romance? What Lies Just Beyond Our Vision Down This Narrow Street? The Artist Leaves These Questions For Us, And Moves On To The Next Picture. Although Viktor Shvaiko's Newest Paintings Of Elegant Restaurant Facades Are Unpopulated, They Are Imbued With A Sense Of Human Presence. He Creates A Poetic Atmosphere With Soft Shadows On Cobblestones And Faint Cracks On The Wall That Combine Uniquely With The Peaceful Stillness He Intends To Portray. After Having Attained Technical Excellence In The Manner Of These Traditional Influences, The Artist Now Possessed The Tools With Which To Express His Feelings To The World. At This Point, Viktor's Main Focus Became The Beautiful Altai Landscapes. The Shvaiko Family Then Moved To Transkarpathia, The Western Mountainous Portion Of Ukraine. There Viktor Became Enchanted With The Picturesque And Breathtakingly Beautiful Countryside. He Continued To Paint And Was Invited To Show In Two One—Person Exhibitions In Moukachevo In 1990 And A Group Exhibition In Hungary In 1991. Shvaiko Chafed Under The Stifling Effect That The Lingering Russian Bureaucracy Had On The Careers Of Young Artists. Unable To Get A Visa To A Western Country, Viktor Was Permitted To Travel To Yugoslavia. In The Confusion Of The Civil War, He Fled To Italy With His Paintings Strapped To His Back, Often Encountering Gunfire From Roving Bands Of Militia. Having Arrived In Italy Virtually Penniless, Viktor Survived By Selling His Paintings On The Streets Of Rome. He Managed To Build A Following For Himself, And Save Some Money. He Eventually Returned To A Now More Liberalized Russia, And Was Able To Obtain Passage To America. Arriving In New York With Little Money And Less English, Viktor Was Again Able To Survive By Selling His Work. It Was Here He Developed His Penchant For Painting The Little Cafes And Other Intimate Places That We See In His Work Today, And That Have Become His Trademark. His Enticing Mix Of Beauty And Mystery Has Drawn The Interest And Admiration Of Collectors From Around The World. We Very Much Appreciate Your Interest In This Piece.
