FINE RHODOCHROSITE SPHERE

The highly patterned surface of this lovely little polished sphere bears witness to the skill of the master lapidarist in working a material of such variable hardness. Streaked with the lovely soft pink and white banded patterning for which Argentinean rhodochrosite is so prized, it is enlivened by thin veins of black and gray, patches of fine-grained matrix rock, and a dramatic aperture lined with the fine blade-like crystals of the rhodochrosite, and smooth soft gray chalcedony. It measures 3 1/2 inches diameter on a lacquered wooden stand.
