LARGE FOSSIL BIRD SPECIMEN
Confuciusornis sanctus
Late Jurassic, early Cretaceous
Central Asia
This spectacular fossil represents a new and important type of prehistoric bird from the abundant deposits of Central Asia, which in recent years has yielded at least four exciting new species. With good three-dimensional definition to the fine, hollow bones, it boasts superb curving hand and foot claws, with well-defined blood grooves. It is arranged in a compact pose, with the head turned to one side to display an evocative beak profile, and even ghostly traces of feather impressions are visible, making for a highly aesthetic display piece. The bird measures 11 5/8 inches long in a pale gray 14 x 10 inch oval matrix.
