Description
Hendrik Frans van Lint (Antwerp, 1683 - Rome, 1763) ext. 13.7x16.9 in., int. 9x12 in. Hendrik Frans van Lint, was born and trained in the dynamic city of Antwerp, where he became a skilled landscape painter. During his stay in Rome - probably gaining experience in Vanvitelli’s workshop - his production will differ, following two opposite strands. On the one hand, he produced topographical views in the wake of Vanvitelli’s experience, based on the views of architectural ruins; on the other, he showed a marked interest in idealised, fantasy landscape painting. Here the painter chose not to refer to the great 'Flemish-style' fantasy landscape painters, such as Van Bloemen, but was struck by the works of Claude Lorrain in Rome and his interpretation of the idealised view. This pair of paintings on copper makes direct reference to this tradition: probably the result of observing the landscape 'from life', it is then reworked and enriched by the dreamy inventiveness of the painter, who suggests the evocative and almost scenographic mixture of nature and art, landscape and architecture.
