AMERICAN OIL PORTRAITS, SIGNED F. NOELLE, PAIR, 1846, 20" X 22":Female portrait is signed and dated lower left, male portraits is initialed and dated in the lower right; period frames (25 3/4" x 22 1/2" exterior dimensions of frames).
Major restoration to both including in the heads (significant repairs to the left side of the male's head readily visible under room light and under UV light fluorescence along the edge scarification can be seen; half of the female's face has been overpainted, also the female portrait shows restoration at the bottom); overall craquelure with instability to the paint in both; female has c 12% to 18% total fluorescence under UV light while the male portrait shows only c. 2% to 3% fluorescence under UV light which is quite misleading since there is much more restoration than that visible under room light; wear to period frames; neither appears to be lined; cannot remove the backs so the extent of any possible patching is not known (male portrait at least must be patched since the very visible repair in the head looks like possibly a major tear); Rf, 2-10-2012, 12:27 PM
