40: SOBOROVA, A. The Protection of Motherhood and Infan
Nedelya okhrany materinstva i mladenchestva [The Protection of Motherhood and Infancy Week], a poster by Alexandra Soborova. Regional Ekaterinoslav printing (run of 500 copies only), 1923, 98 x 40 cm.
The slogans on the banners carried by the marching infants in this amusing poster range from “We Want Fresh Milk” to “We Want Sensible Fathers.” The 1923 Protection of Motherhoods, Infancy, and Homeless Children Week campaign included fundraising events in 45 regions of the Soviet Union. Soborova's popular poster, originally printed in Moscow, was in high demand; many regional printings were made, often in colors different from the original due to the shortages of printing supplies.
Soborova studied art in Moscow and later in Paris; in 1979, her early works were included in the major Paris-Moscou, 1900-1930 retrospective. Throughout the Soviet period, she worked primarily as a posterist, largely specializing in health posters, and as an illustrator of children's books.
