Description
Millionamy postroim velichayshuyu v mire Nizhne-Volzhskuyu gidroelektrostantsiyu [With Millions of Hands, We Will Build the Lower Volga Hydroelectric Station, the Largest in the World], a poster by V. Gushchin. Published by the Lower Volga Section of SnabOSVOD, [Saratov], 1932, 91.5 x 65.5 cm.
A remarkable thing about this attractive poster is that its topic was largely a product of ambitious dreams of Saratov enthusiasts. In 1932, there were no definitive plans to build any hydroelectric plants on the Lower Volga, let alone the largest plant in the world. A fairly large hydroelectric station was built some 100 miles north of Saratov in 1970s. It is by no means the largest plant even among the Volga stations, but it does produce enough electricity to meet the regional demand.
We were unable to find much information about the artist. A considerable number of important Soviet posterists (e.g., Zhukov and Klimashin) studied at the Saratov Art Technical School in late 1920s-early 1930s and later moved to Moscow. It is possible that Gushchin's career followed the same trajectory - there exist advertising posters from 1950s signed V. Gushchin and printed in Moscow.
