A great black umbrella with a hidden sword curio. The whangee bamboo crook handle measures about 8" along the arc and is 3/4" in diameter. It blends into a 1 1/4" plated brass fitting above a black silk umbrella. When the handle is given a quarter turn to the right, a 14" sharp blade in small-sword configuration can be withdrawn. The black silk umbrella is held closed with an elastic band that buttons over the folded cloth. The open umbrella is in very good condition with no damage. The piece ends with a short wood piece and a 1" brass and iron ferrule. The overall length when used for strolling is 35" and the condition is very good. It is perhaps English, ca 1920's, and it is much less commonly encountered than the sword cane curios. Estimate: $1000-$1500.
