A very nice etched Captains of Finance and Industry cane. The plated brass knob handle is 1 1/8" high and 1 1/2" across the top. It sits above a fully inked and etched hardwood shaft that highlights an eagle holding a ribbon with "Pax Vobiscom", (peace be with you), and the faces of W.H. Hunt, J.P. Morgan, J.R. Keene, Wm. Rockefeller, and Prof. G. A. Treadwell in raised panels. " Captains of Finance and Industry" is also written as well as much background decorative work. A 1 3/4" bi-metal ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 36" and the condition is very good. (On page 111 of Dike's Canes in the United States, there are examples of etched Captains of Finance and Industry canes. She speculates the these types of canes may have been made by jail inmates.) It is ca 1890's and it is a very fine example of the kind. Estimate: $1000-$1500.
