Description
A carved wood folk art cane giving a glimpse of a couple's life. Made of a single piece of stained hardwood with painted gold highlighting, it has a ball handle that measures about 1 1/2" in diameter. A large snake encircles the entire cane perhaps symbolic of the dangerous evil that everyone faces as they advance through life. The spiral naive carving starts with a man and woman holding hands as they start their journey together. They appear to continue on with symbols of hard work and religion (Jesus on the cross) guiding them. Children and animals soon arrive perhaps indicating that they might have moved their growing family to a farm. More figures appear perhaps indicating that their family is growing up and taking on their own endeavors of fishing, raising different animals, doing various jobs, and having hobbies, such as woodworking. A 7/8" hand made brass ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 36 1/4" and the condition is very good with some traces of the original gold painting still visible. It is perhaps from rural America, ca 1870, and it is a most interesting example. Estimate: $700-$900.
