Description
A classic early ivory cane on one-step malacca with silver fittings and a long brass ferrule. The elephant ivory knob handle is 1 2/3" high and 1 1/4" at its widest. It sits on a one-step malacca shaft that has a 3/8" collar with central roping, oval silver eyelets, and a 5/8" silver fitting at the step that has a matching roping to the collar. A long, 3/12" brass and iron ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 35 3/4" and the condition is very good, showing the natural digs and dings of about 200 years of existence. It has all the requisite items to confidently date it between 1790 and 1820. With no hallmarks, it was probably made in America from very high quality and expensive parts that required importation and thus, affordable only to the gentry for owning or gifting. It is a fine, classic antique example of the kind. Estimate: $1000-$1500.
