A very good English folk art cane with a sporting theme. Made of a single piece of varnished hardwood, it has a dog head handle that is 1 1/4" high and 1 1/4" at its widest. The small dog, perhaps a pug, is wearing a simulated leather collar. The shaft has faux thorns and is encircled by two long textured snakes, interspersed with various carved items of sport and hobby. There is a running hound, a salmon, a falcon, a goose, a hunting rifle, various woodworking tools, a cricket bat and wicket, and finally, a jackknife. A small 1/2" worn brass ferrule completes the piece. The overall length is 34" and the condition is very good. It ca 1890, and it is a very nice English folk art example. Estimate: $700-$900.
