A superb ivory cane of a Classical nude. The elephant ivory handle is 4 1/8" high and 1 1/2" at its widest. It depicts a beautifully proportioned nude kneeling on a pedestal. The ivory has a nice, creamy age patina. The delicacy of her features is outstanding and one could conjecture as to whom the subject might be. Is it Leda about to bathe in the stream before her encounter with Zeus as a swan? Is it Venus, goddess of love and the mother of Cupid, or is it another beautiful goddess? Only the unknown artist could tell us for sure. There is a 1/3" decorated gold gilt collar on a coromandel shaft with a 1" horn ferrule. The overall length is 38" and the condition is excellent. It is perhaps English, ca 1860, and it is a marvelous example of the kind. Estimate: $4000-$6000.
