A splendid French Art Nouveau vermeil silver cane. The petite silver "L" handle is 2 1/4" high and 2" to the side. It features a silver base with overlaid vermeil floral and reticulated leafy design, and there are tiny French hallmarks. Made to be carried as a fashion accessory, it has an ultra thin black hardwood shaft that ends with a 3/4" burnished brass and iron ferrule. The overall length is 37 1/3" and the condition is very good. Several examples of Art Nouveau silver handles are shown in Dike's La Canne Objet D'Art beginning on page 300. It is ca 1900, and it s a marvelous example of the type. Estimate: $800-$1200.
