Artist: REYN DIRKSEN (1924-1999) Size: 24 3/4 x 37 1/2 in./63 x 95.2 cm Joh. Enscheden, Netherlands In 1953, Dirksen created a poster for the Holland-America Line promoting the SS Maasdam and SS Ryndam with the slogan “Comfort and Economy” (see PAI-III, 284). Here, signed the same year, but not printed until April of the following year, is an image for the line’s star–the Nieuw Amsterdam, fondly known as the “Darling of the Dutch.” Although she was one of the last luxury liners on the North Atlantic, efficiency and service seem to be bigger priorities here. The overhead view shows off acres of deckside space -- including a tennis court -- while the slogan reassures us that “It’s good to be on a well-run ship.”
A-/ Slight tears at bottom edge.
