Artist: REINHARD HOFFMÜLLER (1894-1975) Size: 37 1/2 x 27 7/8 in./95.3 x 70.8 cm Kunstanstalt Harry Bunzel, Berlin “Most of Hoffmüller’s posters ... serve as time capsules capturing the height of the glittering, somewhat decadent lifestyle that became associated with the [Weimar period]. A local poet, K. Mergerle von Muhlfeld, summed it up: ‘Thick air, gossip with booze, kids begging, freshly-painted gigolos, Night clubs, lewd dancing, nude dancing. Cigarettes, cigarettes, cocaine! That’s Berlin’” (Hoffmüller). This poster for the Modern Dress Ball at the Philarmonic expresses that sentiment perfectly with its leering, suggestive mascots.
