358: Monte Carlo / Tir Aux Pigeons. 1900
Artist: ADOLFO HOHENSTEIN (1854-1928) Size: 35 x 49 1/4 in./88.8 x 125 cm G. Ricordi, Milan As Monte Carlo never permitted gambling to be a primary feature of its tourism advertising, artists were forced to focus on the area’s other amusements. Here, in the dusty roseglow of sunset, a mustachioed gentleman brings dignity and sure masculinity to the sport of pigeon shooting. To the contemporary eye, the palette and pose have a Wild West tinge, bringing up thoughts of adventure.
